A Princess in the Making

My girls are fascinated with all things princess. Ella recently acquired a "princess handbook," which offers guidelines for the grooming and rearing of future royalty. The girls' hope is that by adhering to all the rules of the handbook, they will one day become princesses themselves. Mostly though, they're just interested in looking pretty and smelling good. They certainly disregard rules like "a princess never raises her voice" and "a princess does not complain about her food." They seem interested only in frivolities like "a princess should always smell like a rose" or "cucumbers freshen and lighten the eyes." Both girls have taken to daily misting themselves with rose water and to sometimes resting their eyes beneath slices of cucumber.
I tell them all of the time that they're my little princesses. They reply: "that doesn't count." Oh well, I try.
