Today we celebrated Ella's 5th birthday. Ella insisted on not only a princess theme but also a coed party, and so I convinced her to amend the theme a bit. Our compromise: a princesses and knights party. The girls came dressed as princesses, and the boys we knighted upon their arrival. We had on hand some cardboard armor and shields, as well as a multitude of weapons, including but not limited to battle-axes, spears, daggers, and swords. Good job, Daniel.
Greyson was, perhaps, our most enthusiastic knight.
Due Principesse
Though all of our princesses and knights were valiant, none of them was strong enough to slay the dragon. And so I tore the dragon's head from it's body and shook the life from it, while the kids frantically gathered as much candy as they could. In retrospect, I ought to have known that encouraging the kids to beat something to utter destruction would confuse them. Nonetheless, Daniel, mounted the dragon's head as a warning to all who might dare to challenge the Davis Rule.
Ella's birthday party, like most parties of young kids, was chaotic but fun. She was blithe and bonny and utterly regal as we all celebrated the joyous occasion of her birth. And as we wrapped things up for the day, here's what she had to say:
My party was lots of fun, but it wasn't awesome. Awesome would be like swimming to the bottom of the ocean or going to another planet. But this was just a party. It was good and it was fun, but it wasn't awesome.
It's hard to live up to the expectations of a 5 year old with a vivid imagination. By her standards, I'm quite certain that she will never have an awesome birthday party. I think, however, that she will recall this day fondly.
