The Ike Conspiracy

We hung around Houston during the hurricane--to protect our property.   There are, after all,  few better times to loot than after a hurricane, and so Daniel thought it prudent to remain in our house, holed up in the dark.   This way, if there were damage to the house, we could repair it; if there there were looters in the house, we could . . . ?

Anyway, why would anyone loot our house?  We don't own a stereo, a television, expensive jewelry, or anything else worth looting.  If someone were to walk into our house after a storm, surely he would walk right back out.

But, for the sake of family harmony, I agreed to ride out the storm.  Something I will never agree to again.  Hurricane Ike was terrifying (exciting, according to Daniel), and it seemed unending, as if trapping us in slow motion.  At two o'clock, winds were howling, power was out, and I was plotting a way to whisk my kids to shelter.  Trees were snapping, power lines falling, our fence blowing down, and we were in darkness, unable to see, too scared to fall asleep.

Maybe Daniel didn't feel so scared.  He was playing video games on his iPhone.  I suggested that he save his charge for an emergency.  He thought better of it.

Maybe the kids didn't feel so scared.  They slept through the storm.  All night.

Actually, Ella did wake up around four in the morning, during the worst of the storm.  She asked, "so, mom, when is that storm coming?  I don't hear anything."

I remember a similar scenario here with the ice storms....I wanted go somewhere warm with clean water and lots of LIGHTS! We ended up going to Disney several months later!

The Sugarland crew also stayed put for the storm, though they drove up to hang out with us afterwards. The general consensus from the whole family was that "Category 2" was their limit.

Glad that you guys are safe and sound. We were thinking about you.

I like Holt's fam's idea that "Cat 2 is my limit." For some reason, that cracks me up.
