Stealin' a Young Girl's Heart

Virginia wasn't the only one to fall in love on our trip to Kansas.  Seems both of our girls are smitten--Virginia with Kate's dad, Ella with Kate's son.  Luke and Ella, both 4 years old and only weeks apart, are already certain that they will one day marry.  It all sounds innocent enough, but when I recount the events of the weekend, I am a little disconcerted.

Wednesday:

Luke professes his love to Ella.  Kate walks into the living room to find Luke embracing Ella, trying to kiss her.  Kate overhears Ella say, "Luke, that's for adults." Luke then says to Kate, "I'm gonna marry her."

Later in the day, I walk into Luke and Watson's room and overhear Ella say again to Luke, "That's for adults."  Ella and Luke see me and smile, and Luke says, "I'm in love.  I'm gonna marry her."  I ask Ella if this is true and she responds, "I've told him that I need more time to think about it."

In the late afternoon, we plan to take the kids out back to swim.  Watson and Luke are in the kitchen with Kate, when Ella walks in, dressed in her bathing suit.  Luke smiles, jumps back, and says, "Wow!  You look cute!"

Thursday:

We take a short trip to Lawrence and enjoy strolling up and down Main St.  Some of us enjoy it more than others.

Later that evening, Kate finds Luke resting on the couch, while Ella strokes his forehead.  She overhears Ella say, "Luke, I will marry you."

Well, perhaps there is a chance that Kate and I will finally be related.  Twenty years or so and we'll know . . .

In the meantime, I've gotten a little insight into their relationship.  Ella was scribbling like mad yesterday, and she made the following comment:

"I know Luke and I are best friends, because he likes me so much that even when I scribble, he thinks my pictures are beautiful."

What girl doesn't love a little flattery?

That is dramaz. I cannot wait to watch Ella go through middle school and high school.

Good luck with that.
